The Tony Macauley & Barry Mason composition Love Grows provided the first breakthrough for session singer Tony Burrows and Edison Lighthouse in 1970, selling 4.5 million copies worldwide. While Tony Burrows success continued with White Plains, Brotherhood of Man, and First Class, his original backing group toured briefly under the name Edison.
Tony Macauley meanwhile retained the name Edison Lighthouse, and found another line-up for touring and recording. "Its up to you Petula" provided a second hit in 1971, and this line-up maintained the success with live appearances entertaining audiences around the world and building a reputation for providing Top Class Entertainment.
They have numerous accolades including being voted The Best 60s Band at the Butlins Festival of the 60s, which is the biggest event of its kind in the country. The band performs at most of the UKs prestigious venues and holiday centres and has worked regularly for Cunard on the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria.
Edison Lighthouse were voted best band at Butlins Minehead 60's festival in January 2014 and were best all round entertainers at this festival. The band were up against stiff competition with The Tremeloes, The Dakotas, The Searchers and The Troggs all appearing in the same weekend bill.
From the early 70 's to the present day the band has featured Brian Huggins (front man and lead vocalist) and Peter Butt (bass and vocals). In 1973 Rick Foster joined from Chicory Tip (who had a massive hit in 1972 with "Son of My Father") and more singles followed. "Can't Stop Me Dancing" was a disco hit in Germany (with a gold disc), and the excellent Giorgio Moroder composition "Today's a Tomorrow" eased into the charts after getting on the playlist in 1974. Last year Dick Judd retired from the band and Stephane Booroff took over on drums. Stephane is now a Premier drums endorsee, a famous british name in drums and an iconic name from the sixties when the band was first founded.
The fact that Edison Lighthouse is still in demand as a live act is testimony of their ability to entertain and engage any audience.
